So, here goes the updates!
- I have gestational diabetes! Waaaa! I've known for a few weeks now and it's actually not that bad. I guess the placenta affects your glucose levels and since I have two placentas in me, I had a higher chance of getting it, no matter what I did. So, I have it. I had to take a 4 hour class at the hospital. I met "my team". They are really good about making you feel supported. There's dieticians and nurses dedicated to gestational diabetes patients. So, the class involved meeting those people, a brief biology lesson on the body and diabetes, learning how to meal plan and creating a plan based on individual recommendations the dietician has made, and then learning how to use the glucose checker and record results. So, I am on a sort of weight watchers diet thing (except I need to gain weight) and I poke myself 4 times a day. The hardest part is the meal planning. I actually had a rough first day because it was more than I usually eat, I have 6 meals a day! Although the portions are small, I felt bloated from eating so much. I usually eat until I am content and not full. I was full all day long! But, I got smarter with my food choices and chose things that were less volume, which meant that I could have some sweet things. =) Yay!
- I am still 1 cm dilated. I forgot if I wrote abou that before. So, just that alone put me at high risk pre-term labor. That is what got me on the early bedrest that I now abide by. I was kind of pushing it for a bit by shopping or cleaning, but Jerm has put a stop to all that. I also had to be admitted for 2 days at the hospital to get these special shots. Beta-methasone, I think, something like that...there is another name for it, too. It's a steroid to help the twins lungs develop quickly in case I go into labor early. The good news is that I haven't dilated more and sometimes women go through the whole pregnancy that way. One thing is that besides poking myself 4 times a day, they have me on a new medicine that seems to help avoid pre-term labor, but that means Jerm also has to poke me once a week with a special shot.
- My cervix is thinning. This is the area of most concern. The cervix, we've learned, is a dynamic thing. It lengthens and shortens. I guess mine has been a little too short sometimes and is getting shorter as time goes on. More reason why I need to lie or recline so the pressure from the babies' weight doesn't wear it out too early. I think that is my biggest challenge. I love to sleep, but I don't like to lie down or recline all the time. I find myself wanting to sit up or walk around. But, Jerm has been really good about keeping me on track and I feel so bad for him. He is totally stressed! He handles it well and tries to hide it from me.
- We are currently staying at my Aunty's house. I am still really close to home, just down the hill and across the freeway. My parents are repairing their ceiling and may be getting ready to sell their home so that we can all move into a bigger one. I made one request that we have separate kitchens and living spaces. We'll see what happens, we may still buy a house on our own, though.
- We are looking for a new car/mini van. All of our friends/relatives with 2 or more kids vouch for the mini van. I think we are seriously looking at the Mazda 5 or we may go for a Sienna or Odessey if we find a really good deal. We cannot take our babies home in a truck, so we need to get one quick. Luckily, it's a good time to buy one right now.
